Pacific Classic Day 2026: Del Mar's Biggest Saturday

There is one Saturday every summer when Del Mar stops being a day at the races and becomes the day.

August 22 is that Saturday.

The Grade I Pacific Classic is Del Mar's richest and most prestigious race, a $1 million contest at a mile and a quarter, and it anchors a card carrying five graded stakes and more than $2 million in purses. It is also a Win And You're In for the Breeders' Cup Classic, which means the horse that crosses the wire first earns an automatic spot in the biggest race in American racing.

If you are going to pick one day at Del Mar this season, pick this one. And if you want to spend it on the owners' side of the rail instead of in the grandstand, there is a way in.

Start here: download the Run Fast Racing app, complete your membership signup, and enter RARE in the Referred By field for the current special offer.

What is the Pacific Classic at Del Mar?

The Pacific Classic is the West's richest stakes race, run at the classic American distance of a mile and a quarter on Del Mar's main track. It sits as race ten on an eleven-race card, with a probable post time around 6 p.m. Pacific. Details can shift, so confirm the final schedule on Del Mar's official Pacific Classic page before you plan your arrival.

What makes the race matter is what it decides. A Win And You're In sends the winner straight to the Breeders' Cup Classic with fees paid. Horses do not point at this race casually. Barns build entire summers around it.

The full Pacific Classic Day 2026 card: four graded stakes

Most big race days have one race worth watching. August 22 has four.

  • Pacific Classic — Grade I, $1,000,000, one mile and a quarter on dirt
  • Del Mar Oaks — Grade I, $300,000, three-year-old fillies at a mile and an eighth on turf
  • Del Mar Mile — Grade II, $300,000, one mile on turf
  • Green Flash Handicap — Grade II, $200,000, five furlongs on turf

Two things worth knowing about that list. The Del Mar Oaks is a second Grade I on the same afternoon, which is rare outside of championship weekends. And the Green Flash was upgraded this year from Grade III to Grade II with its purse raised from $150,000 to $200,000. It is also a Win And You're In, for the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint.

Three of the four run on the Jimmy Durante Turf Course, which is the prettiest place to watch a horse race in California.

Who is running in the 2026 Pacific Classic

In mid-July, Bob Baffert confirmed he is sending Nysos to the Pacific Classic rather than running him at Saratoga. His reasoning was practical. Running here lets the horse go straight to the Breeders' Cup without another prep in between.

Nysos has a case as the best handicap horse in the country. He has already won at Del Mar twice, taking the Grade II San Diego Handicap and then the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile over the same surface. He was runner-up in the Saudi Cup in February and came back to win the Grade I Met Mile.

Fields are not final until nominations close, so the shape of the race will change between now and race day. But when a barn like that commits early, the rest of the division starts making decisions around it.

How to plan Pacific Classic Day at Del Mar

Pacific Classic Day draws the biggest crowd of the meet. That changes how you should plan it.

Arrive early. Not for the first race. Early enough to walk the grounds before the crowd reaches full volume, find your section without fighting for it, and see the paddock before it is three deep at the rail.

Dress for your room. Del Mar runs polished Southern California, and this is the day people bring their best. If you are in the Turf Club, the formal dress policy applies: a suit or sport jacket for men, suits or daytime dresses preferred for women. Our Del Mar 2026 guide covers what to wear in full.

Read the card before you arrive. With five graded stakes, the afternoon moves quickly. Knowing which races you actually care about means you are not scrambling through a program while the field loads.

Understand the board. Odds move until wagering closes, so the number you see twenty minutes out is not the number you get. Set a budget before the first race, and stop when the day stops being fun. Del Mar requires patrons to be at least 18 to wager.

How to experience Pacific Classic Day as an owner

Most people experience Pacific Classic Day from the grandstand. There is another way to see it.

Run Fast Racing is a co-ownership platform built around a growing stable, with celebrity partners including Lil Wayne, Lil Yachty, and Rauw Alejandro. Members follow the horses through the app, receive updates and race-day event access, and may receive eligible promotional payments connected to designated results.

On opening Sunday of this meet, two Run Fast horses won on the same afternoon. Che took the fourth race on dirt and Ah Jeez won the finale on turf, both from the barn of Doug O'Neill. Attending co-owners walked into the winner's circle twice and the champagne came out twice in the Champions Room. The full story is in our Del Mar opening weekend recap.

Why Pacific Classic Day is Del Mar's best Saturday

Del Mar opened in 1937 with Bing Crosby greeting the first guest at the gate. A year later the Seabiscuit and Ligaroti match race drew twenty thousand people and a national radio audience. The track has been a place where sport and culture meet ever since.

Pacific Classic Day is the modern version of that. A million-dollar race, four graded stakes, the best horses on the West Coast, and a crowd that dressed for it.

The 2026 meet runs through Labor Day, September 7. There are good days left after August 22. There is not another one like it.
