Three U.S. Festivals Worth Planning Around

Some American festivals are worth building an entire trip around, but they demand very different plans. Coachella is a ticketed music and fashion weekend in the desert. Mardi Gras is a citywide season with parades and traditions. Burning Man is a participant built temporary city that requires serious preparation.

Dates, ticket rules, routes, and entry requirements change every year. Use each event's official source before booking travel.

1. Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival

Where: Indio, California

Coachella combines major music bookings, large scale art, fashion, and multiple stages across two spring weekends. It is also a logistics exercise: festival passes, lodging, transportation, heat, and group timing all need to be handled early.

Plan for

  • Buying passes only through official or authorized channels
  • Choosing between nearby lodging, a house, camping, or a longer transfer
  • Confirming shuttle or driver plans before arrival
  • Dressing for desert heat during the day and cooler temperatures after sunset

Check the current calendar, passes, and policies at Coachella's official site. If the trip begins or ends in Los Angeles, RARE can help build the LA portion through its nightlife concierge; festival admission is separate.

2. Mardi Gras in New Orleans

Where: New Orleans, Louisiana

Mardi Gras is not one isolated party. It is a season of parades, balls, neighborhood traditions, food, music, and gatherings leading to Fat Tuesday. The strongest trip respects that culture and plans around parade routes rather than treating the French Quarter as the entire event.

Plan for

  • Checking the current parade schedule and route maps
  • Booking lodging early and understanding street closures
  • Leaving room for daytime parades, local restaurants, and live music
  • Following local safety guidance and respecting private krewe events

Review current dates and visitor information at Mardi Gras New Orleans.

3. Burning Man

Where: Black Rock Desert, Nevada

Burning Man is not a conventional luxury music festival. Participants build Black Rock City around art, camps, gifting, self expression, civic responsibility, and leave no trace principles. There are no ordinary spectators and no simple VIP shortcut to the preparation.

Plan for

  • Reading the survival guide and ticket rules before committing
  • Preparing water, food, shelter, dust protection, lighting, and waste removal
  • Understanding consent, participation, and leave no trace expectations
  • Building enough time for entry, exodus, weather, and unpredictable conditions

Start with Burning Man's official event information. If the preparation does not appeal to you, that is useful information, the event is designed around participation, not passive consumption.

Which festival fits you?

  • Choose Coachella for a polished music lineup, fashion, art, and a structured ticketed weekend.
  • Choose Mardi Gras for history, parades, food, music, and a celebration spread across an entire city.
  • Choose Burning Man for radical participation, community building, art, and serious self reliance.

Whichever trip you choose, book from official sources, protect the group's transportation plan, and do not confuse social media hype with confirmed access. For a Los Angeles night before or after the trip, request access through RARE.

Plan the Night

RARE coordinates guestlist access, VIP tables, and private celebrations across Los Angeles' most selective venues. Access is curated, not sold.
